About Brigitte Franco
Selecting,
raising and breaking young horses is probably the most rewarding aspect of
my
"horse life". I grew up learning from and most influenced by Connie
Bienvenue, a successful hunter, equitation and jumper rider. She had ridden with
the highly recognized trainers such as George Morris, Paul Valiere, Mark Junger,
and Linda Kossick-Langmeier. I studied her training ringside for
hours on end and rode under her tutelage until a back fracture ended her career
of horses.
I
continued my equitation training while riding for Boston University's
intercollegiate team. I spent my summers showing on the A circuit and helping to
break the babies who were born on the farm. We raised warmbloods,
thoroughbreds, and crossbreds. At 20, I purchased my first German Hanoverian
weanling to raise and train on my own. We debuted at NEDA's breeder classic and
took home the Championship, which qualified us for the North American Breeder's
Classic at the prestigious Dressage at Devon. I was discouraged by all (trainers
& local judges) to enter due to my height (or lack thereof) to present a horse
at such a renowned competition. I packed my bags, my Dane, my horse, Feininger,
and headed down to Devon, PA alone. I'll never forget leaving the in gate with
tears (of joy) running down my face. We finished pinning 10th out of 43
horses.

After college, I began buying and
retraining thoroughbreds from the race track for hunters, jumpers, eventing,
polo, and dressage. While training a few racehorses for Pony Express' Polo Team,
I met my wonderful husband, Jose. After we fell in love, we decided (I begged)
to give up Palm Beach and settle down here on the North Shore. After sustaining
a blinding injury in an exhibition game, Jose decided to study at Mint Valley
Forge's Farrier School in Maryland. I am blessed to be able to share my passion
for animals with Jose and our son, Scotty, pictured on the right with his pony,
Chico.
My
thirst to learn lead me down a path of trainers from many disciplines, all of
which I have learned from. My personal favorite is Jerry Kenney. as he possesses a supernatural ability to train & teach combined with
incomparable integrity, humility, and generosity.
Through
listening, watching, experiencing and experimenting,
I have taken with me as many training methods as I have left behind. Although I
remain a "ring side analyst", I now depend on my own methods for breaking,
constantly modifying my approach to meet the needs of each horse. The joy for me
in teaching is learning, revisiting the commonalities as well as discovering the
differences between each equine. Every horse is a new student offering a
new challenge, a new adventure, and continued learning that I am honored to be a
part of.
